The largest and most well-known island in the Canary Islands is Tenerife. Between Gran Canaria and Gomera islands, Tenerife is located in the middle of the seven Canary Islands archipelago. The seas of the Atlantic Ocean wash the island. As a result, this island is the most attractive and popular compared to the other islands in the archipelago.

It is situated in the spectacular Teide volcano, which has a lot of beaches, lovely bays, and slopes. Every year, more than 10 million tourists go there. You may hire a vehicle of any class or use one of Tenerife’s luxurious buses to go about. Travelers adore Tenerife vacations because of the thrilling and uncommon entertainment, distinctive beaches with black sand, the beauty of the cliffs, and the chance to breathe in the pine-scented air.

The underwater world of the island

The underwater world around the islands allows you to get acquainted with the sea inhabitants of the large family of dolphins and whales. Tenerife whale watching in their natural habitat is a much more impressive spectacle than seeing them in a dolphinarium.

The probability of meeting sperm whales is higher during the migration, which takes place from March to May, and for other significant marine life – from November to February. However, it happens to meet these animals during the season and at different times of the year.

Local species available year-round

Whale and dolphin watching is available year-round. However, on Tenerife boat tours, you can only see the fins protruding from the water, as the ship is far away from the passing sea animals.

However, after a closer look, experienced tourists and guides in some details can distinguish their species. Cetaceans can be photographed or filmed.

The bottlenose dolphin (large dolphin or bottle-nosed dolphin)

This is the most famous species of dolphin, which can be easily found near the coast of Tenerife. Their average length is 2.5 meters, and older individuals can be more than 3 meters long. They live in groups of 10 to 30 animals. Dolphin backs have a dark gray coloration, which becomes lighter toward the belly.

Short-finned grinda (pilot whale)

This is the easiest species of whale to observe found in Tenerife.

These whales have short fins rounded at the edges. The color is black or dark gray, and the head is gray or white. The belly and throat often have gray or nearly white spots, and the head – has gray or white stripes running diagonally up above each eye.

Less common species

Sperm whales

The sperm whale is the second largest marine animal in the world. He eats about 1 ton of shellfish and fish per day. The sperm whale’s brain is the largest in the entire animal world, and its heart reaches 1 meter in diameter. The whale prefers to stay in deep water, not swimming close to shore, as there is a large amount of food – fish, squid, clams.

Striped whale

The minke whale has a long, elongated body. A distinctive feature is the 3 growths on the head of the mammal. In addition, on its belly are small white spots.

Aphaline

Aphalins are also among the most common ocean dwellers near the island of Tenerife. They are dark gray. The belly is lighter, almost white. Their pointed snout resembles a beak.

Big-faced and coarse-toothed dolphins

The distinctive feature of these cetaceans is the white spots on the skin. Big-faced dolphins are small and occupy the central part of the body, but the large-toothed dolphin – is more giant and located more sparsely. The weight of these sea creatures – is 100-130 kg.

Bryde’s striped dolphin

The Bryde’s striped duck belongs to the smaller striped ducks. Its length ranges from 12 to 14 meters. Its body is very elongated and colored dark gray with small light spots at the neck and abdomen. The characteristic of this species is three growths on the top of the head. As in all striped dolphins, a sickle-shaped dorsal fin is located far back.

Gray dolphin

Adults can reach a weight of 300 to 500 kilograms. Length up to 3 to 4 meters. Feeds mainly on cephalopods and mollusks. The dorsal fin of the gray dolphin is high, deeply incised at the posterior edge, and slightly shifted to the front half of the body. The beak, typical of other dolphins, is absent. Scattered light-colored spots on the body.

Migratory species

Finval

It is a close relative of the blue whale and the second largest animal on the planet.

Adults are living in the Northern Hemisphere, reaching a length of 18 to 24 meters. Unlike most other species of whales, female fin whales are more significant than males. The fin whale is much slimmer and lighter than the blue whale.

The back of the fin whale is dark gray or dark brown, and the belly and underside fins are painted white. Fin whales can be identified by the asymmetrical distribution of colors in the front part of the body: the lower jaw is white on the right and darker on the left.

Seival

Seivals reach a length of 18.6 meters and can weigh up to 25 tons. The back coloration is dark, the sides are gray with small light spots (traces of ectoparasite attachment), and the belly is gray to white. The dorsal fin is large, located at the beginning of the posterior third of the body. Seival lives in all oceans of the world.

The minor killer whale or black killer whale

Minor killer whales live in tropical and temperate seas. Sometimes migrate to shore, but prefer to remain in deeper waters. Live in groups that may contain several hundred orcas of varying ages.

The overall color is black or dark gray, with a white stripe on the ventral side. Some individuals have a paler gray coloration on the head and sides. The head is rounded.
